ENG| In Together Alone, for the first time, Hungarian dancer and choreographer Zoltán Vakulya and Chen-Wei Lee, former dancer of the prestigious dance company Batsheva, dance together. The performance was presented as a national premiere during Operaestate Festival, and for the occasion the two choreographers created an original itinerary, leading the audience through the rooms decorated with frescoes of Palazzo Pretorio in Cittadella.

We can feel free to wander around the rooms of the first floor, it resembles a small labyrinth; here, among the colourful frescoes that emerge from the walls we meet the beauty and the candour of the full nudity of Chen-Wei Lee and Zoltán Vakulya. Let’s try to follow them, or at least cross paths with them, while a tragic and fatal force draws their bodies together to then pull them apart room by room, without allowing them to truly meet. They seem to be guided by something superior, that draws them in, pushes them away, catches them in small vortices, to then release them into the emptiness of the next room. Their faces continue to look for each other while their gazes tell of a destiny that inescapably looms over them. It brings to mind the the myth of the two halves that Plato asks Aristofane to describe in his Symposium. Once, man and woman were one, perfect and beautiful until Zeus divided them in two, «and yet each half wished to reconnect with the other; they embraced one anotjer, they stayed closely intertwined and, wanting to be reconnected once more, they let themselves die of starvation and sloth».
It is from here, from a mutual search – they look for each other, we, the audience, look for them in turn – that Together Alone comes to life, a piece both choreographed and interpreted by Chen-Wei Lee and Zoltán Vakulya. A “narration” that procedes through flashbacks. After losing them, we find them again in another room. They are standing, she is behind him, adhering to his back as she lengthens her arms along his like the shoot of a vine tree. He can feel the warmth of her body but cannot see her, as he is looking straight ahead. A block of marble on which someone has already worked with a scalpel, removing anything superfluous and allowing their bodies to show themselves, revealing what they once were. Liberating the dance within them. A slow movement, articulated alomg the axis of the upper limbs that bend, fles, arch like plant appendixes at the mercy of the wind. The movement becomes faster and extends to the rest of the body, the lengs bend and lift, they climb over one another anf now she has her back to him and is thr one leading the dance. But here comed another flashback that leaves them suspended between one room and the other. Now they are finally stamding ome in front of the other. Their bodies sway together, finding points of contact: forehead, mouth, chest, belly, pelvis. Their arms swing and rotate together at great speed like a Vitruvian being, symbol of union and harmony. The tongue comes out of its small cave to introduce itself in the other’s, in an erotic and alternating primigenial game. Unity and duality intertwine without solution of continuity and even in the next room which is a true shot-circuit. The rhythm becomes strongly syncopated and swing, typical of jazz music, and the two performers throw themselves in a charleston in a couple- frenetic, wild, tribal like the propitiation dance of some African tribes that leaves one breathless. Now their bodies are like magnets, rolling on the ground they intertwine and twist around each other, wrapped together as close as possible weighing on the flesh of the other or they carry each other trying to balance their weight. A lock gained through great effort and tension «Becoming a single thing one with the another, so as never to leave one another, night or day». Soulmates, perfect just like at the origin of time. But this perfection that once gave them strength and vigour, raised the suspicion and fear of the Gods. In truth, myths, cruel and raw, are there to impart values, to make the inexplicable concrete. And so Zeus proclaimed:«I believe we have a way of ensuring the human kind survives and, at the same time, gives its arrogance up: we need to make them weaker. Now I will cut each of them in two, so that each part will be weaker. We will also gain another advantage, in that their number will be greater. They will move straight on two legs, but if they prove to be arrogant once more and do not stay subdued, well then I will split them in two once more, so that they will only move on one leg, just like in the wineskin game».

Anime gemelle, perfette come all’origine dei tempi. D’altra parte i miti, crudeli e cruenti, servono per spiegare i valori, dare concretezza all’inspiegabile.
