From Dance to Words: the polyphonic glossary of Migrant Bodies ENG/ITA

«The deep nurture of a relationship passes through the nurture of the word, the nurture of that inner space to make room for someone else, someone akin or different to oneself, and whose life has every right to be legitimised and outlined».

There is no doubt whatsoever that words are born out of the ancient and deeply human necessity of giving a name to what surrounds us, to what goes on, to what we see and feel.
«Words are not born in academies, but on the street, among people» wrote Gabriel Garcia Márquez. To name is to celebrate the existence, to legitimise the reality that surrounds us. And it is the people that, through their own life experiences, give value to the meaning of words.

Activism, Beauty, Belonging, Bridge Builders, Community, Crime of solidarity, Disorientation, Empower, Flexibility, Help, Hope… these are just some of the 100 words included in the Polyphonic Glossary of Migrant Bodies-Moving Borders. 100 words heralding different voices, those of 50 authors between participants and partners of the European project Migrant Bodies. 100 words that trace the path of a journey and gather the concurrency of different perspectives, each the bearer of its own powerful vision of the world.

The Glossary is the small- yet large- heart of a wider digital issue- edited by the American playwright and choreographer Monica Gillette- which in turn, through essays, interviews, and practices, reproduces on the page the complexities and the versatility of a research project aimed at identifying and developing new actions and initiatives for the inclusion of refugees and migrants through dance and movement.
The issue was presented during the project’s closing symposium, held at the Municipal Museum of Bassano del Grappa on 12th and 13th July, 2019. On this occasion we had the chance of meeting four dance artists involved in the project: Andrea Rampazzo (Italy), Žac Valenta (Croatia), Jordi Galì (France) and Katharina Senk (Austria); and to experiment and test some dance practices with them, the best way- “learning by doing”- of understanding and witnessing how the shared experience of dancing together can lead people back to their “social body”, giving way to a feeling of complicity, a space free from judgement, a total lack of conflict, that sense of mutual trust that is typical of a community.

«There is no right or wrong when it comes to dancing. There are unusual places in which to dance. – writes Elisabetta Bisaro, spokesperson of La Briqueterie, the French partner- In the Migrant Bodies project, we have witnessed what it means to bring together people of different age, sex, background and experiences. Diversity means ability to adapt. Ability to adapt means flexibility. Flexibility means openness».
The glossary’s 100 words can be a bridge, an embrace, and other times even a blow, when they are the bearers of lives that have been assailed, offended, violated.
We know it, words often put up barriers, they are sources of judgement and categorisation, of distance. But they are also capable of becoming a preferential way of access to encounters, to revelation, to confrontation and exchange, to knowledge and sharing.
