DANCE ON DISPLAY | MM Contemporary Dance Company dancing “Extended” by Camilla Monga and “Round Trip” by Roberto Tedesco for Arte Sella

ENG | Dance on Display is our ongoing feature intended to be looked at, browsed through, and frequently revisited. Communicating dance through images is not just above conveying a narrative. It is also an art in itself, smoothing and curving time; allowing us access to the past, to what has already occurred, in an “eternal return of the same”, frozen in an infinite frame. To see through someone else’s eyes that which we have not ourselves yet seen.

Riccardo Panozzo has been entrusted with the story in images of some of the performances that we have watched on your behalf. Here is the photo-gallery of two shows: “Extended” by Camilla Monga and “Round Trip” by Roberto Tedesco. Both were staged in Arte Sella’s Vegetal Cathedral on 11th September 2022 for OperaEstate Danza.

We have also included choreographer Camilla Monga’s thoughts on her own performance, annotations that she generously shared with ABCDance.

ENG | Federica Furlani’s pieces contain quotations from two environmentalist composers: Brian Eno and Raymond Murray Schafer. Of the latter, one can hear him intoning: “We are responsible about the tuning of world”.

By this River is one of Brian Eno’s tracks from 1977, preceding his foray into ambient music with entirely instrumental production. The lyrics are about disorientation caused by a flooding river, in other words an imminent natural disaster that the singer says he observes without worrying about the consequences… Hypnotised by the flowing water, he is fascinated by time that seems to be suspended…

Federica Furlani’s is a contemporary take on ambient music’s sound-scapes, and carries on the message of the two aforementioned musicians who had set ambient music in motion, eliciting the dancers to let themselves be led by the evocative and meditative musical moods, with a time that belongs to nature. A slower cadence where the repetition and rhythm of the seasons is a form of eternal change, unlike the tempo associated with our own everyday lives; far more frenetic, chaotic and altogether distressing.

We are responsible about the tuning of world”.
