Playing with contemporary patterns
(versione italiana dopo la Galleria immagini)

Mini B.Motion
is a special project focused on the younger audience, that continues and develops through this new edition of Operaestate Festival Veneto 2018. A summer school for young dancers, aged 8-13, to open their knowledge to new choreographic ideas, while practicing and sharing the language of contemporary dance.
First meeting with Ingrid Berger Myhre, June 2-3, to introduce twelve young ladies to basic contemporary practices through games that deepen observation and widen perception. The first class works on sound, rhythm, space, composition. Starting and finishing in a circle the dancers are asked to introduce their name, meet their new colleagues and clap hands in unison on different given patterns.
Once they’ve got acknowledged of all participants, they start to get accustomed to space, walking freely in straight lines that soon become circles; and circle trajectories are then explored in amplitude and pace. But space starts to shape also in its emptiness where you can pass through, like a living breathing organism.

A further step is required, as not only we can’t relate only on ourselves, but we do also belong to a bigger system. How can dance translate all this? An interesting game, that of keep walking silently choosing 2 people and maintaining a perfect triangle with them. It comes out a choreographic landscape where the young dancers understand that life is not still, that we are all connected, and most of all that in order to maintain a perfect shape, a perfect triangle, we must adjust all the time. A small reproduction of the cosmos.

The class goes on exploring shapes. The participants are asked to find out the contact points of their body, not thinking only in terms of ‘hands’ and ‘feet’. And as we are all interconnected, the new game put the dancers in a line, looking for a point of contact with the body close to you, while the last person keeps on reshaping the whole. Two groups are created where everybody is involved: the doers create a moving sculpture finding their own free connection related to an existing one; the watchers, as in a museum, can move around exploring the piece of art, while changing perspective and discovering new observation points. One final and crucial step is missing: spaces can be full or empty, so the same game now doesn’t focus on contact points anymore, but on the so-called negative spaces.

And now that tools have been studied and discovered, it’s time to choreograph! Every dancer is free to choose what to do with her own body: create a solitary sculpture or use the negative space of someone else. No matter how free we are to decide which place do we prefer, when shall we move, or what to do, we will always be a reference point to someone else to deal with. And as we are choreographing, as in a theatre, a group would now work on stage, while the other one would play the sit down audience.

Enjoy the Play!

Giocando con gli schemi contemporanei
(English version above the Image Gallery)

Buona performance!
