If you love Pina Bausch, then this show will for sure pull on the heart strings. The sound of cheek to cheek by Louise Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald fills the Cappella Mares hall. The performers, dressed beautifully in their Sunday best, sway gently in an embrace, dancing softly as the audience settles. The sound dissipates, a woman stumbles forward into the space, the rest follow, submerging her in a huddle of bodies, supportive and protective. This pattern repeats itself for a short while until one is left standing, alone. An exchange of Italian dialogue does not hinder my attention, I am eager to figure out what’s to come, and I’m not disappointed. The show’s progression is steady yet full or surprises; falls, tumbles, cartwheels, singing, the whole lot. To think the cast is formed of performers aged 60+ and sufferers of Parkinsons, is unbelievable. The music choice was brilliant, all Italians in the audience began to sing along to timeless classics, whilst we were invited to join the dance. And everybody danced. It was wonderful.
