NUOVI SGUARDI | Yes, I am a B&B owner | Carla Pelusio at BMotion Danza 2019 ITA/ENG

ITA | Yes, I am a…

ENG | Yes, I am a… is a series of interviews curated by Francesco Guazzo within the section NUOVI SGUARDI. Their ensemble collects a sample of the widest variety of spectators and tries to understand how the professional and human identity may or may not influence the perspective on performances.

Carla Pelusio (Bassano del Grappa, 1955) housewife, manages a Bed & Breakfast in Bassano which hosts artists and dancers not only during the period of BMotion, but also in relation to the artistic residencies linked with the Centro per la Scena Contemporanea Garage Nardini.

FG: Could you tell me how your professional and human identity may or may not come to influence your gaze as a spectator?

First of all, I would say that it all depends on the person. For example, I happened to see someone many years ago- who I also saw again multiple times but I only had as guest a couple of times at the beginning- who has been doing things that are very “innovative” for years, very unusual and unique, not simple, intellectually and physically complex, but I find, however, that that same person has some vulnerabilities: maybe the need to have the bed propped up against the wall on the side, to be protected on that side, or the need to call for help after nearly fainting, having grazed a finger when opening a window that is particularly “tough”. What I see, in other words, is the product of a strong person who I know has- or at least used to have- some weaknesses. My gaze as a spectator is probably influenced by how the artists behaved in my home, by how they leave the rooms, by the fact that they rush through breakfast, if they work in a group I eavesdrop and find out what they were talking about and when I then see the work or the sharing… seeing them in their daily lives certainly has an influence on me because when I see the performance I never forget how I see them at home.

FG: Starting from your own background and coming up to here: a sentence on power.

Of course, it is whoever organises the festival that holds the power to choose who and what to bring on stage. The various festivals around Italy are probably what they are because of who manages them, who coordinates them, and who organises the and has certain ideas, a certain will, a certain taste, or that wants to raise awareness around something. But it is also likely that these people are in turn influenced by the powers of someone else that allow them or not to organise what they are organising. So, for me, there are probably  several levels of power and influence; it is down to the organisers to have the ability to have a strong and convincing enough personality to, if in need, also change the attitude of those that can decide whether to do certain things or not.

FG: A wish for BMotion 2020.

As far as I’m concerned, I would like to be able to understand all of the shows, but this is also a personal thing because everyone interprets them in their own way, and so this may be a dumb request… I don’t know, maybe I would ask for fewer things, and perhaps even for fewer people, because it’s true that it is all very fruitful – I guess – to have contacts and to bring over and to send to other countries other beings that are undoubtedly very far from our culture, but then it seems to me that there is the risk of getting to a sort of “circus”, which certainly isn’t the right word, but I can’t think of the right one now. Anyway, the true risk is that of overdoing it… an option could be to spread out everything, over a longer time period. But it must be said that I don’t follow all of the sectors, because I either clean the bathroom, or I don’t, but, regardless, not all of the themes interest me and I would have something to say only about few of them. But I have only just thought of something that I truly wish for BMotion 2020: a meeting between artists and critics, a debate between dance performers and critics of dance and of the arts in general; to understand how they interact with one another, those holding the power and if they have power on over the other, and also how critics criticise what they see, in terms of what, and if maybe in a different moment they would make a criticism differently, if they are aware, lastly, of the impact they sometimes can have on someone’s life.
