Four women enter the church from the vestry portal. They are all dressed in blue, shirt and trousers evoking a uniform of some kind. They sway, standing like silent mourners, waiting for unseen exequies. One is to the immediate left of the altar and cautiously intones the Stabat Mater over the notes of the dissonant score written by the black American composer Julia Perry in 1951. As the incantation intensifies the other dancers enhance it with accentuations, holding them, performing chest and upper-body movements, turning around so that they seem like three blue patches in space, three silhouettes. They lean against the doors, repeatedly, as if to suggest that they want to go out. One by one the three performers leave the scene. We await all alone, just with the music. Their exit curtails our anticipation, it’s taken as a subtle call to do likewise. As we go out ‘Our Lady of Sorrows’ finally appears: an apparition at the side of the road, silent, gazing up to the heavens. To behold her we are but few.

Quattro donne entrano nella chiesa dalla porta della sagrestia. Sono vestite d’azzurro, con camicia e pantaloni che ricordano una divisa. Oscillano, in piedi, come prefiche silenziose, in attesa di invisibili esequie. Una di loro si colloca nell’angolo sinistro dell’altare e intona cautamente lo Stabat Mater, sulle note della dissonante partitura che la compositrice afroamericana Julia Perry scrisse nel 1951. Mentre il canto si accende, le altre performers danzano con piccoli accenti, come trattenuti, eseguendo movimenti di sterno e di petto, con rotazioni che le fanno sembrare tre macchie azzurre nello spazio, tre silhouette disegnate. Appoggiano i corpi sulle porte, a più riprese, come a indicarci la loro costante intenzione di uscire. Una dopo l’altra, le tre performers abbandonano la scena. Noi pubblico restiamo lì dentro, soli, con il canto. La loro uscita svuota l’attesa e risuona come una disorientante chiamata a fare altrettanto. Usciamo fuori, dove ci appare finalmente la “madre dolorosa”: lì, sul ciglio della strada, in silenzio, con lo sguardo rivolto verso un celeste altrove. A vederla siamo in pochi.
